About the Author
Prof. Dr. Frank C. Mooren is Head of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany and Medical Director of Clinic Königsfeld, Center for Medical Rehabilitation, Ennepetal, Germany. He studied medicine at Ruhr University Bochum and obtained his M.D. at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. He completed his clinical training in internal medicine at the University of Münster. His academic career includes positions as Assistant and Associate Professor of Sports Medicine at the University of Münster and, from 2006 to 2016, Professor of Sports Medicine and Exercise Physiology at Justus Liebig University Giessen, where he also headed the Department of Sports Medicine. His research focuses on exercise physiology and immunology, rehabilitation sciences, and the role of physical activity in prevention and treatment of disease with special emphasis on the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms together with personalized approaches. Another area of research interest is promoting a healthy lifestyle using modern eHealth technologies and behavior change tools. Prof. Mooren is an active member of several scientific societies and has received multiple research awards. He serves on editorial and reviewer boards of numerous international journals in physiology, sports medicine, and biomedical science, contributing extensively to the advancement of exercise-based prevention and rehabilitation research.
Prof. Dr. Boris Schmitz currently works as Senior Researcher at the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany and Clinic Königsfeld, Center for Medical Rehabilitation, Ennepetal, Germany. He became an extraordinary professor at the University of Witten/Herdecke in 2025. He studied biology in Münster and Kiel and received his doctorate in Biology from the University of Münster. He later completed a second doctorate in Sports Sciences at the University of Münster and obtained his habilitation in Experimental Medicine. He held several academic and research positions at the University Hospital Münster, including group leader at the Institute of Sports Medicine, and served as Privatdozent in research and teaching at the University of Münster. His research involves exercise physiology, cardiovascular and vascular biology, and the genetic and cellular mechanisms underlying prevention and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease. He focuses on turning complex biomedical insights into practical solutions, from prevention strategies and rehabilitation concepts to personalization and digital health approaches. Prof. Schmitz is an active member of several scientific societies and serves on several editorial boards, and reviews for leading international journals in cardiology, physiology, and sports medicine, contributing to translational research at the interface of molecular medicine, exercise science, and prevention.
